First, confirm it's actually run out
"Run out" under funding periods means the funding released so far is used up — not that the whole plan is empty. Check in the my NDIS app or with your plan manager: what has been released to date, what has been claimed, and when the next release lands. Unspent funding from earlier periods rolls over, so the available amount is everything released minus everything used, not just this period's release.
What you can't do
Funding from a future period can't be claimed early. A provider can't invoice against the next release before it happens, and a plan manager can't pay from it.
Options
- Check the other components. Funding can't be moved between components, but the support you need may sit under a different one that still has funding released — your support coordinator can tell you what's claimable where.
- Talk to your support coordinator or plan manager now. They can see the exact dates and amounts, help prioritise supports until the next release, and liaise with providers about timing.
- Contact the NDIA if circumstances have changed. If spending is high because your needs have changed, that's a reason to ask about a plan reassessment, or about how funding is being released. Early release of future funding is only considered in particular circumstances, so put the request through your coordinator with the reasons set out.
- Agree a plan with your providers. Most providers would rather know in advance than find out when an invoice bounces. Rescheduling non-urgent supports to just after the next release date is often enough.
Avoiding it next time
- Work out a safe weekly amount at the start of each period and re-check after large invoices. Our funding period calculator does this in a minute.
- Watch the "even pace to plan end" figure as well as this period's figure. Spending at the period cap every period leaves no buffer for the last one.
- If one component keeps running short while another is underused, raise it at the next plan review — the mix may need changing.
This page is general information from a registered NDIS provider, not advice from the NDIA. Your plan document and the my NDIS app are authoritative for your own plan.
